'Heavenly Angels' day care owner seeks bankruptcy protection

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky.  (WDRB) -- The owner of a Louisville day care center that was involved in a fatal bus crash in May has now filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Documents filed this week in federal court show that Lavonia Lewars has $38,450 in assets.

But she's seeking liquidation on $616,509 in liabilities.

Records show that Lewars owes money to between 100 and 199 people -- and more than 80 appear to be former employees.

In May, Lewars closed her day care business after one of its vans crashed into a tree with 14 children on board.

A van monitor died in the crash.

Lewars has also been indicted for fraud and theft by deception in a separate, state criminal matter.

Officials accuse her of falsifying attendance records and overbilling a child-care subsidy program.

Officials say she may have wrongly received more than $300.000 in state funds.

WDRB could not reach Lewars for comment.
