SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- A 15-year-old Indiana boy says his grandmother knew he and his siblings were being abused before their father beat one of the boys to death.
The boy testified Friday that 53-year-old Dellia Castile of South Bend used cocoa butter to treat the injuries inflicted on him by her son, Terry Sturgis.
Sturgis was sentenced in June to 140 years in prison for the Nov. 3 killing of his 10-year-old son, Tramelle. Castile is being tried on felony charges of neglect.
Defense lawyers say Castile lived separately from her son even though they lived in the same house.
The South Bend Tribune reports the boy testified that Castille refused to come downstairs the night Tramelle died even though she was aware Sturgis had been beating his sons for hours.
