African American heritage center struggles financially

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage continues to struggle financially despite $15 million in investments over 10 years.

The complex in the Russell neighborhood is now mostly used as a meeting venue since a substantial renovation in 2009.

Work on the center has been a roller coaster.

At one point it was halted for two years after a state audit found federal money earmarked for the project was being mismanaged.

A Center spokeswoman says progress has not moved as quickly as hoped on turning the center into a focal point of Kentucky's African-American culture.
