Fort Wayne schools battling student exodus

Posted: Updated:

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) -- An Indiana school district is taking steps to ward off competition from private and charter schools.

Fort Wayne Community Schools lost 392 students last year to the state's school voucher program despite having an overall A rating from the state Department of Education. It also faces competition from charter schools that have increased their presence in the city.

The district lost more than $2.6 million in state aid last year because of the students who left.

The Journal Gazette reports the district is rethinking how it does business to ensure it is giving parents and students what it wants. It also plans to seek more outside money to help it offer programs that will keep it competitive.

The plan will focus on five schools facing the most competition.
