New Albany teen says she was bullied and beaten up at school

Posted: Updated:

New Albany, IN (WDRB) -- A New Albany High School student says she suffered permanent hearing loss after she was bullied and beaten in class.

17-year-old Kayla Hamby says she was bullied over something she didn't do. She says teen girls are accusing her of creating a fake Facebook page to talk to the boyfriend of one of the girls.

Hamby says she's bullied in person and on social media. She has been getting messages accusing her of calling another student a derogatory name.  Hamby denies that and tells the student to stop messaging her. The girl then threatens to beat her up after two other girls actually did.

Hamby says, "One of the girls had hit me and they both started attacking me. They pushed my head in the wall. They banged my head in the floor and the students had to break it up."

That day on October 5th in class, she says she was left bloody and beaten after two girls, 15 and 16-years old, busted her lip, head, and hurt her ear while the teacher was out of the room.

Hamby says, "I was having head pains and I couldn't hear out of my right ear. They took me to the doctor. They said I have permanent hearing loss out of my right ear and a fracture and the damage is forever."

Hamby says the attack was recorded on cell phones and posted to YouTube until the student who posted it took it down.  Hamby says, "I can't even go to school because I'm scared that I'm going to get jumped again."

WDRB News tried talking to the New Albany High School principal, but she wouldn't comment. She couldn't even tell us if the girls have been disciplined.

Kayla's mother Madeline Hamby says the girls have been suspended for five days, but says that is not enough. She's now working with police and wants charges filed.  She wants the New Albany Floyd County School Corporation to take a tougher stance against bullying.

Madeline Hamby says, "I'm going to tell them that the bullying has to stop. I know a lot of kids that are being bullied and I know a lot of parents that went to all of New Albany schools trying to get something done and nothing is being done."

Monday night's school board meeting is at six o'clock at the School Corporation Building on Grant Line Road. The Board says its procedure is to listen at the public meeting and then address any concerns privately with the administration.

WDRB News also has calls and emails in to the School Corporation Administration, but no one has returned our messages.
