LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Plans are moving forward to build a new YMCA branch in west Louisville. The new branch will be at the site of the Old Philip Morris plant at 18th and Broadway.
The $13 million project would include a state of the art fitness center, swimming pool, classrooms, and child care playrooms.
In the coming weeks, a five-story building will be torn down to make room for the new "Y." As Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer explains, "The 'Y' is obviously a great institution...they can move forward with the project even faster now that federal dollars are involved, so it's a win for them, it's a win for the city."
The old warehouse has been vacant for more than a decade and is in an advanced state of disrepair. Because of safety, cost, and its condition, the old building could not be used.
