Kentucky's painkiller law has led to decrease in prescriptions

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- State officials say Kentucky's new law aimed at cracking down on prescription drug abuse has forced 10 pain management clinics to close.

They also say it's caused a big decrease in the amount of pain killers being prescribed.

The new law went into effect on July 20th.

It requires medical professionals who write prescriptions to use the state's prescription monitoring system.

Governor Steve Beshear says Xanax prescriptions dropped nine percent and hydrocodone, more than seven percent during the first 12 days the law was in effect.
