Jefferson County School Board candidates go head to head

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The school assignment plan dominated Tuesday nights debate among candidates looking to take a seat on the Jefferson County School Board.

Several candidates are JCPS parents who want to see change in both the students assignment plan and student achievement. Many agree moving back to neighborhood schools will be a process, but it's important to consider.

Jonathan Robertson, District 7 candidate, says, "Priority is neighborhood schools, parental choice that's first priority. I also don't think we need to raise taxes anymore, at least not for awhile."

Others want to see how the assignment plan works out in the coming years.

Chuck Haddaway, District 4 candidate, says, "It's a litter early with the student assignment plan to give it a ribbon of success or failure because we're going to a 13 cluster."

But it all boils down to education, how we can get grades up.

Haddaway says, "The graduation rates have been embarrassing lately and I want to make sure we get all the curriculum we can and the best teachers in the classroom our students have to do better."

George Tolhurst, District 2 candidate, says "Stop the mindless busing, go back to neighborhood schools. We should make all schools equal, give the same curriculum to all schools."

There are 14 candidates running for three different districts. Not all 14 attended the forum.
