LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say they've arrested a Louisville man with a troubling past who tried to kidnap a one-year-old child in September.
It happened on Sept. 26 at the L&N Building at the corner of S. 9th St. and W. Broadway.
Police say 49-year-old David Charles Mitchell was sitting in the building, near an office area. The mother of the child was sitting in a row behind him, and her one-year-old child was playing nearby.
Mitchell was a complete stranger to the woman and her child, according to police.
When a friend of Mitchell's walked into the room, police say Mitchell grabbed the child by the arm and started to leave the building.
The mother saw what was happening and started yelling and running toward Mitchell.
Police say Mitchell left the one-year-old in the foyer and exited the building.
The woman called police and filed an official report. Police say they obtained surveillance video showing Mitchell grabbing the child and leaving, and an employee gave officers the paperwork Mitchell filed to receive food stamps.
Mitchell was arrested Tuesday afternoon at his home on W. Main St., near the corner of 27th Street. He's charged with the attempted kidnapping of a minor.
Officers also say they uncovered information about his criminal history.
"He had a charge of sexual abuse in his past," the arrest warrant states.
