Louisville Zoo picks name for newest giraffe calf

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- The Louisville Zoo has picked a name for its newest giraffe calf.  "Silvester" is named after the zoo's longtime giraffe keeper Silvia Zirkelbach.  She and Silvester have the same birthday.

Zoo visitors voted for their favorite name by dropping coins at a kiosk on the zoo's front plaza.  All the proceeds of the naming contest go to Silvester and the other zoo animals' care and feeding.

Silvester is a male Masai giraffe who was born June 27th, 2012.  At birth, he was 6'6" tall and 194 lbs.  He is the 22nd giraffe calf to be born at the Louisville Zoo.
