Ky. police officer OK after bullet lodges in vest

Posted: Updated:

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- A central Kentucky police officer suffered bruises, but no significant injuries after he was shot in a bullet-resistant vest during an exchange of gunfire with a man being sought by investigators.

Nicholasville Police Sgt. Scott Harvey says officer John Rainey, a 16-year veteran, was treated and released Friday night from St. Joseph Jessamine, an ambulatory care center in Nicholasville.

Harvey told the Lexington Herald-Leader Rainey's injuries were limited to "pretty severe bruising" after the shooting, which took place just after 8 p.m. EDT Friday.

Harvey says Rainey was looking for a man seen ducking between two houses when the man fired several shots at the officer. Rainey returned fire, but it was unknown if the man was hit.

Harvey says the search for the man continued Saturday.
