Marian steps up effort to train school leaders

Posted: Updated:

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Marian University is enlisting a New York-based group to bolster its efforts to train more leaders for Indiana's most challenging schools.

The Indianapolis university has partnered with Teach for America to build a school leader training program that supporters hope will be one of the nation's elite.

Marian President Dan Elsener tells the Indianapolis Business Journal that Indiana lacks educators prepared to lead schools in areas of low income, high crime and broken homes. Efforts to prepare principals and deans for difficult schools have been under way for several years but haven't met their goals.

Teach for America will publicize Marian's program among its base of 28,000 alumni.

Marian also plans a fundraising drive to create scholarships and develop the program into one of the nation's elite.
