I-69 Community Day events draw hundreds to new road

Posted: Updated:

FRANCISCO, Ind. (AP) -- The latest stretch of the Interstate 69 extension isn't open yet but it's already seen some traffic.

The Evansville Courier & Press and The Herald-Times reported Sunday that I-69 Community Day celebrations attracted hundreds of curious people to the new highway.

They included the drivers of custom, vintage and specialty vehicles at an event Saturday near Princeton. A carnival-like atmosphere at another event in Greene County drew at least 300 people, including 79 who participated in a five-kilometer run

Indiana Department of Transportation official Robert Zier says the highway should be open from Evansville to Crane by Thanksgiving. Eventually, it will reach Indianapolis.

Georgette Schucker of Haubstadt, near Evansville, says she wanted to see the road that eventually will carry her to see her sister in Indianapolis.
