Waterfront Park walk raises awareness about mental illness

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Dozens of people took to Waterfront Park on Sunday to provide support for those suffering from mental conditions.

The NAMI Louisville Walk for Recovery raises money to combat mental illnesses and spread awareness.

One in four Americans is affected by mental illness.

Participants say they want to dispel rumors about mental illness.

"Just because you're mentally ill, doesn't mean you're a dangerous person," says participant Ruth Marlet. "There's a lot of people here that give each other support. There's a lot of help, and we always need more awareness."

The group encourages anyone with a mental illness to seek treatment, saying that with the proper support, it is a manageable medical condition.
