Two men accused of murdering witness in murder case to be tried separately

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Two men accused of murdering a key witness in a murder case will be tried separately.  The decision was made in court Monday morning to split the trials of Dejuan Hammond and Steven Pettway.

They are accused of gunning down Troya Sheckles in broad daylight in March 2009.  Sheckles was set to be a key witness in the murder trial of Lloyd Hammond.

A witness told police Pettway admitted he was the shooter, saying Dejuan Hammond promised to take care of him for life if he did it.

Pettway's trial will be first, with jury selection Monday afternoon.  When that trial is over, a date will be selected for Dejuan Hammond's case.
