LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say they've arrested a motorcyclist for tearing down the Watterson Expressway at speeds in excess of 120 mph during rush hour.
It happened shortly after 4 p.m. on Thursday.
Police say 34-year-old Robert J. Smith was driving westbound on I-264, near Exit 17a to Ky Route 155, when he passed a Louisville Metro Police detective in an unmarked vehicle.
Police say he was "weaving from lane to lane, in and out of traffic in a reckless fashion."
The police officer allegedly reached a speed of 110 mph while pursuing him, but police say Smith drove even faster -- so fast, in fact, that he pulled away.
Police could not see any license plate affixed to the back of the motorcycle, an orange 2006 Honda CRB600rr.
When they finally stopped Smith, officers say they discovered the plate on the side of the motorcycle, affixed in an illegal fashion.
Smith allegedly had a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun in his backpack, loaded with seven live rounds.
He was arrested and charged with driving 26 miles or more over the speed limit, reckless driving, improper display of registration plates and carrying a concealed, deadly weapon.
In a call to WDRB News, Smith denied all of the above allegations, although he acknowledged he was speeding while trying to get to a doctor's appointment.
