Learning center in SE Ky. helping students

Posted: Updated:

MIDDLESBORO, Ky. (AP) -- A learning center in southeastern Kentucky is helping more middle and high school students stay in school and graduate.

The New Horizon Learning Center/Middlesboro Central School opened last year to students who needed an alternative to traditional schooling. Principal Stephen Spangler told the Middlesboro Daily News that some students have children or full-time jobs while others just need to work at a different pace.

He says some students graduate from the center while others are able to transition back to high school. In its first year of operation, Spangler said 44 of 51 students made progress at the center, and every high school student who took end-of-course exams received a passing grade.
