Scholar House aims to help students succeed

Posted: Updated:

PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) -- Dozens of western Kentucky residents are taking advantage of a new housing and education initiative in Paducah that aims to help unemployed or underemployed adults become self-sufficient.

The public was invited to tour the Scholar House during its official grand opening this month, though program director Debbie Toon told The Paducah Sun that the first students moved in over the summer. Toon says the $8.4 million facility is the first of its kind in Paducah.

To be eligible for residency, students must have a financial need, they must be over 18, they must take at least 12 credit hours per semester and they must keep a C average. Amenities such as on-site laundry and day care are offered to help residents handle day-to-day living while furthering their education.
