LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- A fire in an Oldham County barn has killed 10 thoroughbred horses.
It happened shortly after 3:30 a.m. Monday morning on Park Shore Road, west of the intersection of Hwy. 3223 and Bluegrass Pkwy. in La Grange, Ky.
Firefighters say the barn was fully engulfed when they arrived, and it took them roughly an hour to get control of the fire.
According to Major Keith Smith of La Grange Fire & Rescue, the caretaker of the horses was living in an apartment inside the barn. That caretaker managed to escape the fire unharmed.
Major Smith says, "A lot of our volunteers out here, we're associated with the Bluegrass and the farms, the thoroughbreds, a lot the guys live and work on farms also and I think we're all animal lovers at heart anyway, and you hate to see that you really, really do."
One goat was injured in the fire. That goat was taken to the vet, and its condition is not known at this time.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
Smith says the owners of the horses were renting the property.
