OFFICIALS: West Point residents can retrieve belongings

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Residents in West Point, Kentucky who were forced to evacuate after train cars carrying hazardous chemicals derailed early Monday are being allowed to return to their home briefly to retrieve their belongings.

Mayor Billy Ash is letting people go home to get items they may have forgotten -- such as medicine and important documents.

Nearly 1,000 residents were been evacuated Wednesday after contractors working on offloading chemicals on one of the derailed car sparked an explosion and fire early. The explosion injured several workers, three of them critically.

Dozens of displaced residents spent Wednesday night at a shelter set up at the Muldraugh Elementary School.

Officials say crews are also setting up shelters for pets as well.

It's not yet known how long the evacuation order will remain in force.
