Will Alabama's win over LSU knock IU basketball off the Sports Illustrated cover?
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It is the first week of the college basketball season. It is the prime meat of the college football season. Interests collide in the media world.
I wonder how the collision will shake out at Sports Illustrated.
Media outlets everywhere are finishing their college basketball preview work. Our 30-minute preview show of Louisville, Kentucky and Indiana, titled "Three For The Road," will air Wednesday on WDRB at 10:30 p.m. with exclusive interviews with Rick Pitino, John Calipari and Tom Crean.
We polled 41 local and national media members. We asked them to pick an all-Kentuckiana team from U of L, UK and IU; pick the best coach from Pitino, Calipari and Crean; and to rank the three teams.
Sports Illustrated figures to deliver its college hoops preview issue this week. SI college hoops writer Seth Davis visited Bloomington, and the magazine also dispatched a photographer to town. There was chatter about a cover shot -- different from the shot of Cody Zeller and IU cheerleaders on the front of ESPN The Magazine.
My guess is what happened Saturday night in Baton Rouge changed any opportunity of an IU basketball cover at SI. Remember: I'm not even certain SI is picking IU Number One. They could be going with Louisville or Kentucky or Michigan or Kansas.
My prediction is that Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron played his way right into the cover and the middle of the Heisman Trophy race. IU senior Christian Watford, a five-star Bama football fan who grew up in Birmingham, will understand.
