Zachary Taylor Elementary students send cards to service members

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Simply signing a card could make a world of difference for troops during the holidays.  On Wednesday morning, students at Zachary Taylor Elementary signed cards that will be sent to service members.

Kentucky First Lady Jane Beshear helped kick off the Red Cross effort.  It encourages everyone to sign cards thanking members, veterans, and their families.

As Staff Sgt. John Hawkins, a five-tour veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, explains:  "A lot of us don't get anything, you know, we go over there and sometimes you don't get anything and we get some mail and there's a little card in there that says 'Thank you,' and it makes it all worth it."

To make sure the cards arrive on time, the Red Cross asks people to drop them off before December 7th.  Pitney Bowes Inc. then ships the cards at no charge.
