Second victim dies in Roederer Drive shooting incident

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- A second victim of a shooting on Roederer Drive died Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Amy Vick, 45, died of a gunshot wound while in surgery at University Hospital, deputy coroner Bob Jones said.

Police say Robert Levine, 46, shot his girlfriend in the chest and then turned the gun on himself around 9 p.m. Nov. 14. The case is considered a murder-suicide, Jones said.

James L. Fugett Sr., a neighbor, tells WDRB News, "We heard some noise at the door and someone was ringing the bell."

What haunts Fugett about the tragedy next door is not the swarm of police, the explosion of gunfire, or even the stunning sight of death: "By the time I got up, I could see a little, I could see a young lady running down the street."

He heard the chilling screams of a teenage girl bouncing door to door frantically trying to find help. "That's all she could say -- 'He shot my mama! He shot my mama!'"

Tamara Reif of the Center for Women & Families explains, "Domestic violence is sort of a pattern and there's usually a history and it can happen on a continuum."

Nationally, domestic violence escalates into homicide three times a day, but police say there were no prior 911 calls from this home.  In fact, we're told the victim had just moved into the house with the teenager and one adult child a few months ago.

They escaped the shooting unharmed.

Neighbors tell WDRB News only one thing struck people about Levine, and that's the odd hours he would tend to his home, sometimes trimming a tree at 1 or 2 in the morning.

Detectives didn't immediately have a clear motive for Levine's actions.

Fugett says what he knows it will be with him for days to come. "She was just crying something like, I say it don't happen, it shouldn't happen like that."
