LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A recent study of Louisville-area businesses shows that for every $100 spent at locally-owned, independent businesses, $55 is reinvested locally, whereas only $14 is reinvested when that same money is spent at a national chain.
But shopping from independent retailers this holiday season will yield more than just that warm and fuzzy feeling of supporting the local economy for one lucky person.
The Louisville Independent Business Alliance (LIBA) has launched its annual Shift Your Shopping Contest, and this year it's even easier to be eligible to win.
The rules are easy: collect receipts from five member businesses by 1/7/13, mail in or present the receipts for review at one of the sponsor sites (Highland Cleaners or Feeders Supply), and you'll be entered into the drawing to win $1000 in gift certificates to LIBA businesses. (Once receipts are verified, they are returned to the owner.)
The winner will be drawn on Wednesday, January 9, 2013. The winner can choose from over 500 LIBA businesses where they wish to spend their $1,000.
There will also be secondary prizes awarded, including gifts from A Taste of Kentucky, Babyology, Barkstown Road, Consider Boutique, eyedia, Grasshoppers Distribution, Heine Brothers' Coffee, Jacqueline Saltsman, LMT, Lexie's Trading Post, and Twisted Chocolat.
By shopping local, consumers help to preserve the unique community character of the Metro Louisville area. Dollars spent at community-based merchants also create a multiplier effect in the local economy, and when you want to find a gift that's truly unique, independent businesses are the place to go.
"Shopping locally is truly a gift to the community, as evidenced by our recent study showing how much money remains circulating in the Louisville area," said Michael Jones of Highland Cleaners. "One of the reasons we changed the name from Holiday Passport to Shift Your Shopping Contest is that we want to make it clear what we are encouraging people to do, which in turn makes us a stronger city." LIBA's Shift Your Shopping Contest is generously sponsored by Highland Cleaners, Feeders Supply and LEO Weekly.
