Archie Goodwin led Kentucky past Morehead State with a career-best 28 points.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WDRB) – A quick look at Kentucky's 81-70 victory over gritty Morehead State in Rupp Arena Wednesday night, a win that sent the Wildcats into Thanksgiving with a 3-1 record.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Archie Goodwin is not only making the adjustment to college basketball, he is also adjusting to playing a new position – point guard.
With Ryan Harrow unavailable for the third straight game, Goodwin ran the team for John Calipari again. He's not a point guard. But he can fake it. He'll create more shots for himself than he will for teammates.
And he'll score like crazy. Goodwin finished with 28 points, making 12 of 17 free throws. He had four assists – and four turnovers.
In John Calipari's first three seasons, no Kentucky player has averaged more than 17.3 points – Brandon Knight two seasons ago. Anthony Davis led the team last season at 14.2.
Goodwin is averaging 18.3. I like his chances of averaging 20 this season.
STAT OF THE GAME: Kentucky missed its first five three-point shots. The Wildcats went nearly 29 minutes without making a three-pointer. Enter Julius Mays. He drilled a three from the left wing with 11:12 to play in the second half, stretching Kentucky's lead to 58-50.
More importantly, it extended the Wildcats' streak to 831 consecutive games with at least one three-pointer. Only Vanderbilt (834) and UNLV (842) have longer streaks.
The Wildcats finished 2 for 10 from the three-point line.
STAT OF THE GAME -- RUNNERUP: Kentucky scored the game's first six points. Then Morehead scored the next 16. You won't find stats like this in the record book, but the Morehead spurt prompted the question if a UK opponent had ever scored 16 unanswered points in Rupp Arena before Wednesday night.
CHESS MOVE: Morehead coach Sean Woods cranked up the Eagles to contest every dribble, pass and rebound. Morehead set an aggressive tone, which was one reason the Eagles led for a large chunk of the first half.
But they paid a price at the foul line. Morehead was called for 32 fouls and UK made 31 of 41 free throws.
INJURY REPORT: Point guard Ryan Harrow missed his third consecutive game, this time to return home to attend to a family matter. UK coach John Calipari said that Harrow will not play Friday when Long Island (Brooklyn) visits Rupp Arena.
CELEBRITY SIGHTINGS: Richie Farmer, one of Woods' teammates on The Unforgettables during the Rick Pitino Era, attended the game as did Sam Holbrook, a major-league umpire who won't be receiving many Christmas cards from Atlanta Braves' fans.
UP NEXT: Long Island visits for a 7 p.m. game Friday. The Blackbirds are 0-3, losing to Morehead State by 3, Lafayette by 4 and Maryland by 17.
