LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel is reporting tonight that Charlie Strong has signed a contract extension with the University of Louisville and rejected multiple offers from the University of Tennessee.

U of L spokesmen could not confirm the reports, and Strong did not immediatelyi return telephone calls or text messages.

Thamel reported that, "Louisville and Strong are finalizing a long-term extension that could be announced as early as Thursday. It's expected to be a significant commitment in both years and dollars and will reportedly put Strong in the top echelon of coaches in the ACC."

The report comes after a day of conflicting reports about the level of his interest in the job at the University of Tennessee.

Strong met with Cardinal players at the Howard Schnellenberger Football Complex late Wednesday afternoon. A source said that Strong did not inform the players of a decision but is expected to tell them Thursday.

Strong was reported to the top candidate to be the next coach at Tennessee. Brett McMurphy of ESPN.com reported that Strong told the players that he would make a decision that "is best for the program."

U of L athletic director Tom Jurich has said that he would match any offer from another school. Tennessee is reportedly in dogged pursuit of Strong because the Vols were turned down by five coaches before hiring Derek Dooley three years ago and again by Mike Gundy of Oklahoma State this week.

Strong coached U of L to a 10-2 record this season, three years after the Cards finished 4-8. Louisville will play Florida in the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans Jan. 2.
