Some residents to miss out on flood buyouts

GREENWOOD, Ind. (AP) -- A program to buy Johnson County homes damaged in 2008 floods is likely to leave some residents disappointed.

The Daily Journal reports a $4.5 million grant the county received in 2010 to buy and demolish the homes is nearly gone and that four homes probably won't be purchased.

County planning director Bryan Pohl says the county plans to spend at least $150,000 to demolish 20 homes it purchased, but that would leave enough money to buy and demolish just one more home.

The four homes were on a list of alternate properties, and the county had cautioned owners it might not be able to buy them.

The goal of the buyout was to get homeowners into new homes and prevent future flood damage.
