Officers give gifts to community children

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Nearly 800 families are getting a boost this holiday season, thanks to police.

Officers from LMPD's 1st division and the Portland auxiliary gave away gifts to children in the Portland neighborhood.

This marks the 36th year for the annual event that relies on donations and fundraisers to help those in need.

The event at the Portland Community Church included pictures with Santa, face painting and gifts.

"It's a way for us to give back to the community and put some positive smiles on families in the Louisville community," says Officer Michael Jackson.

The Christmas Giveaway has grown over the years. The first year, only eight children received gifts. Now the event serves hundreds and organizers make sure no child goes home empty-handed.
