Tom Jurich – Best in the Business (12/13/12)
Tom Jurich and I don't always agree. And it is he who disagrees with me far more often than I with him. But that doesn't keep me from recognizing that he's proven himself to be one of this city's most competent executives.
As the University of Louisville's Athletic Director, he's had countless opportunities to steer the school toward glory – or over a cliff. And with very few exceptions, he's made no missteps.
On his first day at U of L in 1997, Tom was immediately faced with several major challenges and produced a string of accomplishments in the years since.
Landing Rick Pitino…expanding Papa John's Cardinal Stadium…moving into the KFC YUM! Center…securing the finest possible coaches for every sport at the school…maneuvering the Cardinals first into the Big East and now into the ACC…in every situation, Jurich has acted boldly, confidently and intelligently. And with last week's success in retaining Charlie Strong as Head Football Coach, I'm pretty sure the entire sports world is now convinced that he's quite possibly the best in his business.
I'm glad Strong is staying. And I'm pleased to have Pitino. But the most important name in the whole picture is Tom Jurich. He knows what needs to be done and he does it. And in doing so, he's put the University of Louisville in position to flourish for a long time to come.
