The students at Silver Creek High School in Sellersburg, Indiana, are combining food and craft this holiday season.

Keith Kaiser is helping students prepare their entries for the annual gingerbread house contest.

The Silver Creek High School Advanced Foods Class continues the tradition of their annual gingerbread house contest.

This is the 9th year seniors have participated in the event.

70 students work in groups of 3 or 4 to create elaborate holiday landscapes out of gingerbread, candies and icing.

The project is due for judging by the end of the day, December 19th.

The students learn critical thinking and develop communication skills.

Interesting fact, the gingerbread recipe made its way into the United States through the St. Meinrad Monastery in Indiana in 1854.

The monks made gingerbread for festivals and to deliver to the sick.
