Beshear says the jury is out on possible Kentucky Kingdom deal

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- (WDRB) Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear says we should know soon whether Kentucky Kingdom will reopen.

Beshear held his year-end Q&A with a small group of reporters today in Frankfort. He touted job growth and the Ohio River Bridges among his major accomplishments.

But one piece of unfinished business is Kentucky Kingdom. Negotiations continue with a group headed by former Kentucky Kingdom owner Ed Hart.

The governor says as long as the financing plan does not include guaranteed money from the state, he believes a deal can be done.

"I wanted to take another shot at this. To see if we could make an amusement park work out there, and see if it was part of our future. I think the jury's still out," said Beshear.

"We're still in those negotiations, but I'm hopeful that in just a short period of time, in a few weeks time, we'll know one way or the other."

The governor also says expanded gambling remains a top priority, but is not committed to pushing a bill next year unless he thinks he has the votes.

Even with gambling opponent and former Senate President David Williams now out of the picture, Gov. Beshear says expanded gambling remains a hard sell in the General Assembly.
