Suspects in Indianapolis explosion could face death penalty

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- One of the three people charged with murder in a deadly Indianapolis explosion is talking about why she committed the crime.

WISH-TV in Indianapolis reports that prosecutors in Indiana say last month's house explosion, which leveled an entire neighborhood, was set on purpose.

Three people have been arrested and charged with murder.

Investigators say Monserrate Shirley, Mark Leonard, and Bob Leonard, Jr., essentially turned Shirley's home into a bomb on November 10th.

They all could face the death penalty.

In a jailhouse interview, Shirley told reporters, "I don't blame myself for it, but, you know, I feel horrible. People died."

Prosecutors say Shirley and her boyfriend had amassed huge debts and wanted to collect up to $300,000 in insurance cash.

Investigators determined that the home's gas fireplace was rigged to pour out natural gas. The blast was triggered by a microwave.

The explosion caused $4 million in losses, damaged or destroyed about 90 other homes and killed two neighbors.

All three defendants will be in court Monday.
