LOUISVILLE, KY (WDRB) -- A small, locally owned gift shop has big plans for the new year. It will soon double the size of its operation.
J.D. Dotson has operated Regalo on Barret Avenue in the Highlands for almost 11 years.
"Regalo means gifts in Italian and Spanish," explains Dotson who says his store has something for just about everyone.
"If you need something for your sweet little grandmother, or your obnoxious roommate, or a little kid, we've got it covered," says Dotson.
He told WDRB News on Monday that he produces some of the photography and paintings he sells in his store; but that it is also a outlet for other local artists and jewelers.
He and his partners also have a second store located in the Galt House to appeal to out of town visitors.
But after a record year of sales in 2012, they are making plans to open a third store on South Fourth Street in an area the city of Louisville is working to redevelop and a fourth one in downtown New Albany.
"I think downtown Louisville is primed for shopping," says Dotson, "and I think Southern Indiana which is home for all of us who own the store are ready to take the idea home."
Dotson says he likes the idea of being a kind of pioneer in the redevelopment effort and like many entrepreneurs says life would be kind of boring without ever taking some chances.
"I think there is a risk in anything that you do," he says, "we are not really the ones who do what everyone else is doing."
Dotson hopes to have the two new stores open in time for Derby.
