LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say a Louisville woman who operates a home day care center has been arrested for the criminal abuse of a 1-year-old child in her care.
According to an arrest warrant, the incident took place on Dec. 21.
Police say 50-year-old Tina Timberlake-Whitaker was operating her home day care center, when she became angry with a 1-year-old girl who refused to stop crying.
Timberlake-Whitaker then allegedly struck the child in the face several times with her open hand, causing the girl to sustain severe bruising to the face, forehead and both ears.
Louisville Metro Police spokeswoman Carey Klain says people in that situation should, "Take a breath. Step outside, ask for someone to come help you. If it's a parent or babysitting anyone in this situation just take a step back and get out of the position that has frustrated you to that point. It's never acceptable. There's nothing a 1-year-old child or a baby or an infant can do to be struck in the face."
Police say that when the girl's mother came to pick up her child, she noticed the girl's injuries and immediately took her to Southwest Hospital for treatment. She then contacted police.
Officers say Timberlake-Whitaker admitted to striking the child.
She was taken into custody on Friday evening and charged with third degree criminal abuse, a misdemeanor, according to an arrest report.
