LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- A federal grand jury in Louisville has formally charged the founder of USA Harvest with mail fraud, money laundering and filing false tax returns stemming from allegations he misused the charity's funds.
The indictment handed down Wednesday replaces a bill of information previously used to charge 63-year-old Stan Curtis. Prosecutors say Curtis, who founded the organization in 1989 as Kentucky Harvest of Louisville, took $183,354 from the charity and charged another $370,000 in personal travel expenses.
Curtis had been expected to plead guilty last month, but a judge postponed the hearing because of questions about Curtis' competency. Curtis is due back in federal court in Louisville on Jan. 31.
USA Harvest picks up surplus food from restaurants, hotels and hospitals and delivers it to missions, soup kitchens and shelters.
