HENRYVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- A Henryville family that lost its home in the March 2 tornado has been victimized again. This time, the disaster was man-made.
This is supposed to be a time of great joy for the McConahay family. Their home, destroyed by the March 2 tornado. Has finally been rebuilt.
"This is not my fun time, but I'm so excited to have a dishwasher, I'm not sure what to do with my self, I'll be real honest with you," said Jennifer McConahay.
But the excitement of moving into a new home has been tempered by what happened on Tuesday.
"They broke a chunk out of the door."
Someone broke into the McConahay's new home.
"Came in and everything that we've been busily trying to replace was stolen. They ransacked the house," said McConahay.
And it's not the first time. Last summer someone broke into this storage shed and stole items that had survived the storm.
A boat was also taken from their yard. Other homes in the storm zone have also been targeted.
"To have someone come in and constantly take what little we have left when we're trying to put it back together, it's just unbelievable," she said.
And to make maters worse, no insurance. Although the McConahay's were moving in their belongings, they do not yet officially live here. They're waiting for the final occupancy permit.
"This house was built for us free of charge because we didn't have insurance the first time around. And here we go again. And no, we can't afford to replace it. We just can't."
But Jennifer says she's determined to maintain her faith in people. She may have seen the worst since the March 2 storm. But she has also seen the best of neighbor helping neighbor.
"This thing that keeps happening to us is not the majority of what's happening out there," she said.
Meantime, Clark Co. authorities have stepped up patrols in the area.
"I want it to stop."
The McConahay's are still waiting on their occupancy permit. But they say, understandably, they don't plan to leave.
