LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB)---Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer wants more support for a local option sales tax increase he says could create millions of dollars in revenue.
Fischer took the idea to members of the Jefferson County League of Cities this morning.
His idea is to create a temporary one percent sales tax increase in Louisville that would help fund major projects -- like bridges and sidewalks.
Fischer will first have to convince state lawmakers to amend the constitution.
Councilman Tom Owen calls it an exciting concept.
"We live in a very competitive environment . We always have. but even more so because we are competing with the whole world - we've got to get an edge. I think this is an essential way to try to get an edge," says Tom Owen (D)- Council District 8.
If state lawmakers approve it, the matter would then be placed on a ballot for voters to decide.
