LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Clark Memorial Bridge is now restricted to one lane in each direction.
In addition, the speed limit was also lowered to 25 mph Monday morning. That means drivers will want to give themselves some extra time in the coming weeks because these closures will be 24 hours a day.
Crews are replacing the handrail and repair sections of the sidewalk where concrete is crumbling. Pedestrians have noticed dozens of cracks and holes on the sidewalk. Some spots are so bad that the highway department used old street signs as a temporary fix.
The repairs got under way early Monday. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokeswoman Andrea Clifford says "work is going to start in the southbound lanes, so for 30 days consecutively once they start their lane closures."
She adds that "the southbound lanes will be closed with one lane going in each direction in what is normally considered the northbound lanes." Once that work is complete, crews will switch to the northbound lanes.
Clifford says pedestrians will still be able to cross the bridge since one side will always remain open during the $1 million project.
