LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police have accused a Louisville man of giving car keys to an unlicensed juvenile: and now they say an innocent victim will have to pay for that crime for the rest of his life.
It happened in June of 2011, according to an arrest warrant. Police say Thomas D. Summers, now 31, was at a party when he took car keys from a female acquaintance without her knowledge.
The keys were to a vehicle that the woman was renting from Enterprise Car Rental.
Summers allegedly drove the car to another gathering, then gave the keys to an unlicensed male juvenile, allowing the juvenile to drive away in the rental car.
Shortly thereafter, police say the juvenile was involved in a serious car accident on Six Mile Lane, near Mamaroneck Road. The female driver of the other vehicle suffered broken bones, but her son, who was a passenger, sustained a permanent brain injury.
Summers has been charged with theft by unlawful taking, and two counts of assault. He was served those charges at Metro Corrections on Friday afternoon.
