LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Saying, "This is our time to shine," Mike Pence took the oath of office Monday to become Indiana's 50th governor.  The inauguration ceremonies took place at the Statehouse in Indianapolis.

Pence ran on a campaign to improve the economy and bring more jobs to the state.

In his prepared remarks, Pence thanked several former Hoosier governors for their service through the years.  Of his immediate predecessor, Mitch Daniels, he said, "You leave office the most respected governor in America. It's a good thing I am only succeeding you, because no one can ever replace you."

He added because of Daniels and thousands of other public servants, "Indiana has emerged as a torch of fiscal responsibility, innovation and reform."  While acknowledging that many Hoosiers are suffering in the current economy, he said, "we must meet this moment with resolve, determined to leave our state more prosperous, our children more prepared, and our communities and families stronger than ever before."

He added, "To do this we must continue to live within our means, hold the line on spending, and let Hoosiers keep more of their hard-earned income."

After eight years, Mitch Daniels is handing over the reins to the six-term Congressman.  Daniels could not run again because of term limits, and will be the next president of Purdue University.

Indiana Democratic Party Chair Dan Parker responded to Pence's inauguration in a statement, saying, in part, "We wish Governor Pence the best on his first day in office, and we look forward to seeing his full legislative agenda soon. We hope it will focus, as he pledged, on jobs and the economy and not on issues that will divide our state and put certain Hoosiers at a significant disadvantage.

And Parker promised that Democrats would with Gov. Pence "on issues where we can find middle ground, and we will hold him accountable if he strays from a common sense agenda for all Hoosiers."
