LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell says he is optimistic about Afghanistan's future after a recent visit there. McConnell made his seventh trip to the country accompanied by Republican Sens. John Barrasso of Wyoming, Jeff Flake of Arizona, Ted Cruz of Texas, and Deb Fischer of Nebraska.
Sen. McConnell says his optimism was sparked by meetings with military leaders. He also favors leaving a residual American force of about 10,000 troops after combat troops leave in 2014. Those troops would train and assist Afghan forces.
The congressional group also traveled to Israel where they met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
