LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) --It is the newest place in Louisville to stay fit and is the eleventh branch of the YMCA in the Louisville area. The YMCA at Norton Commons is the first new Y to open in the area in 12 years.
It is a $13 million investment by the YMCA in one of fastest growing areas of Jefferson County near the Oldham County line.
Friday is opening day at the new Y for charter members of the branch. The 100 exercise machines were filled with people working to stay in shape.
They included Bob and Doris White. For Doris it is the first time she has joined a health club. "Never been to a Y before, never joined a Y before but I am very impressed and excited," Doris White said as she worked out on a stationary bicycle.
Bob White was impressed with the new branch too. "The facilities are beautiful and they are new," he said.
The executive director of the Norton YMCA, Mike Bramer, says the new YMCA has a open floor plan with the most up-to-date design and attractions.
"Our indoor water park features are something that separates us from some of our other facilities," he says, "and this is our largest indoor running track in our association."
Bramer says even though this is only the first day the new Y has been open, the response has been so strong that they are already looking ahead to expanding.
A lot is dependent upon whether the Jefferson County School System decides to build an elementary school next door. "We may still attach ourselves to a Jefferson County elementary school," explains Bramer, "which would give us the use of a gym at night and on weekends, so the school would use it during the day; but we also have plans to expand just on our own side of the property."
There is plenty of room for the Norton YMCA to grow. It sits on a 12-acre site.
This won't be the last YMCA in the Louisville area. Plans are already in the works for a new Y in West Louisville.
Fund raising is now underway.
