Fencing competition brings the best students to Louisville

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE (KY) --  Participants describe it as fun, fast and painful. They are the best fencers from around the country. Hundreds of fencers from across the country are in Louisville this weekend as part of a qualifying tournament.

Many fencers are attempting to qualify for the Junior Olympics or even earn a college scholarship. A young fencer from San Francisco describes the three styles of weapons.

"Saber is the only weaponry where you are able to slash. With foil and epi it's more stabbing. Saber is a lot faster," said Wren Sakai, fencer.

The bouts can last five or 15 touches.
