Community remembers former Metro Councilwoman

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB)---With standing room only, hundreds of people packed St. Stephen Church on to pay their respects to former Councilwoman Judy Green.

It was an emotional ceremony for many people as they remembered Dr. Green, who died earlier in the week at the age of 57 after suffering a major heart attack.

At the same time, there was uplifting music and words to celebrate how they will remember her.

"I think the attendance said it all. To see so many people come out just to see her and show the love and respect they had for her said it all for me," says family friend and attorney Derwin Webb.

Derwin Webb, a Louisville attorney, represented Green when she was accused of an ethics violation and resigned from Metro Council. A council court later voted to formally remove her from office.

While that's not the way he hopes she will be remembered, it was during that time they became good friends.

"She became not only an acquaintance and a friend, but a family member of mine during that process and I'm sad to see one of my family members go today," says Derwin Webb.

Hundreds of other people shared that sentiment as they remembered Judy Green not only as a public figure, but as a wife, mother, sister and friend.

"A real good human being. She cared about the community and she cared about children," says Dwight Sweeney, a family friend.

Nearly a week after Green walked her granddaughter to the front of the church to be baptized, her own ceremony ended with another baptism.

Friends say it was only fitting.

"I think that was a good way to honor her life and legacy that she lived," says Dwight Sweeney.
