LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB)---With single digit temperatures in the forecast, you don't want to run into any surprises at home.
"If the temperatures are below freezing for a week or so you won't even know any of your pipes are broken until the weather gets better and then all of a sudden you have water running in your basement," says Bill Norman, Manager at Keith's Hardware.
He says that's one of the biggest concerns when it comes to the cold.
Here are some simple steps you can take, to avoid calling a plumber.
"One, you can just leave your faucet dripping because most of the time if the waters running its not gonna freeze," says Bill Norman.
Bill Norman also says "If your pipes are somewhere you can get to them you can put a heater somewhere near them where its blowing hot air on them".
Heaters can also be dangerous.
Make sure you get something like this, specifically designed for the indoors.
"They should never burn like a grill inside because it puts off too much carbon monoxide," Bill Norman says.
If you have any holes or cracks in your house, it will cost you.
This is a good time to take a look around your home.
"That's the biggest thing you can do just patching up all the holes because collectively it's a large space that heats going out," says Bill Norman.
Another tip is to carry de-icer on you.
It'll help if your locks freeze up on your house or car.
