Study finds that Kentucky really is the horse capital

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky is known as the horse capital of the world, and now there is solid proof.

The Kentucky Equine Survey found that the Bluegrass state was home to more than 242,000 horses in 2011, with thoroughbreds the winner among breeds.

A University of Kentucky associate professor says Kentucky's figure was nearly twice the number of horses that live in New York.

The survey estimates the value of horses and horse-related assets in Kentucky at $23.4 billion.

The last comprehensive snapshot of Kentucky's horse industry was in 1977.
