GARY, Ind. (AP) -- A judge has ordered the Gary Community School Corp. to repair the heating system at a privately operated turnaround school by Monday.
The Post-Tribune reports Marion Superior Court Judge Cynthia Ayers in Indianapolis issued a temporary restraining order Friday citing state law that calls for the district to be responsible for maintaining Roosevelt College and Career Academy in a manner consistent with its other schools.
Roosevelt last held classes Tuesday, when temperatures inside were in the 40s. Repair crews arrived Wednesday and found some water pipes had frozen and burst.
Superintendent Cheryl Pruitt says private operator EdisonLearning Inc. should be held accountable because a maintenance person the company hired was responsible for water boilers not coming on.
A telephone recording Sunday said the school was closed for heating problems.
