Restaurant seeking funds online

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- The recent closing of Lynn's Paradise Cafe shows just how tough the restaurant can be.  Another locally owned restaurant is marking its one-year anniversary by asking its supporters for help.

Gabe Sowder opened Taco Punk on Market Street in the NuLu neighborhood in 2012. He says while he enjoys the business, opening a brand new restaurant has been a real challenge and he has yet to see a profit.

Sowder says his fast food Mexican restaurant has a lot of loyal customers, just not quite enough of them.  "We are in a situation that when you do the math, we are only 35 people a day away from breaking even," says Sowder.

So until more patrons walk through the doors, Sowder has begun an on-line campaign on to raise $20,000 by February 22.

"What we are looking for," says Sowder, "is a lot of small contributions, they are not just donations, we do have a rewards tier program."

Sowder says if the goal is reached, he will use the money raised to expand an outdoor eating area and invest more in his catering operation where profits are a little easier to reach.

He says, "We are looking for people who value a business that buys from local farmers; has an environmentally sustainability program; and is concerned about its employees."

So far, Sowder has reached about 25 percent of his goal, with three weeks to go.

"Kickstarter is just one of a number of initiatives we are undertaking to keep Taco Punk a viable business and moving forward," adds Sowder.

Sowder says if he can just hang on awhile longer to see the NuLu area really take off, his restaurant will finally be able to turn the corner to profitability.
