LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Indiana's governor is trying to put an end to charges against a police officer and his wife who nursed an injured baby deer back to health.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources pushed for charges against Jeff and Jennifer Counceller, for illegally possessing the animal.
The case sparked anger online, and Governor Mike Pence stepped in.
"I asked the Department of Natural Resources to provide me with a full briefing in the case. They did that. I reviewed the facts and the law in the case. And I encouraged the Department of Natural Resources to re-evaluate the case," says Pence.
The Department of Natural Resources is now asking a prosecutor to drop the charge.
The agency had told the couple to return the injured deer to the wild, but they instead took it home and nursed it back to health.
The deer vanished last summer, as the Department of Natural Resources was about euthanize it.
