Hundreds of children receive free dental treatment

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Hundreds of local children are getting a free trip to the dentist.  Smile Kentucky is behind the program in which about 60 students from Shawnee Newcomer Academy and Trimble County schools received treatments today at the U of L School of dentistry.

This is the first of about six treatment days.  In all, about 300 kids from 23 local schools will get the dental visits.

Robert Elliott of the U of L School of Dentistry explains, "With this program we are able to reach out to kids in the community who do not have insurance or Medicaid, so we are a love all, serve all -- will take care of whatever your needs are."

The event is usually all done in one day, but because of winter weather last week, the rest of the kids will visit local dentists and the dental school this week.
